Patriotic Thanksgiving postcards are an interesting variation on the typical antique Thanksgiving postcard.

Before I started collecting postcards, I never really thought of Thanksgiving in terms of a patriotic holiday. July 4th, Memorial Day, absolutely but not Thanksgiving Day. I wonder if that sentiment was more common around 1900-1920 which is when most of the vintage Thanksgiving postcards were designed and published.

Vintage Patriotic Thanksgiving post cards veer from the subtle to flag waving unabashed patriotism.

This postcard is an example of “subtle”; there are no flags or images of the Thanksgiving proclamation. Instead, the turkeys are white and blue and the corn is red.

Then there is this postcard which has it all;  the flag, and eagle even a turkey.  I have no idea what the orange red poppie signify though !

Finally,  there is this postcard with a flag, turkeys and a child praying in a bright red military style jacket.

I wanted to highlight some of my favorite vintage Thanksgiving postcards.

Antique postcards with pilgrims are always popular and I especially like this postcard designed by artist Ellen Clapsaddle. It features children praying before their Thanksgiving feast.

This artist signed postcard features two popular topics;  Indians and pilgrims.  It shows a pilgrim woman and an Indian brave sharing what looks to be a plate of sweet potatoes.

Victorian Thanksgiving postcards featuring children are always popular.  This postcard was published by Raphael Tuck and Sons and shows a pilgrim boy chasing a hapless turkey with an ax.

This postcard combines three collectible areas;  dutch children postcardschildren postcards and Thanksgiving postcards.  It shows a dutch boy carrying baskets of food wishing us Jest a Greeting Fur Thanksgiving.

Finally, there is of course the antique Thanksgiving postcards featuring turkeys.  It can not be Thanksgiving without a turkey!  This first postcard features a pilgrim woman with her pet turkey (hard to eat him if you name him).

This turkey is dressed for the winter with hat and scarf.  Or is he preparing to make his get away?
